In the Past
The Civic is an adaptive reuse of one of the oldest medical facilities in Philadelphia, St. Joe’s Hospital. Originally opened as a Catholic hospital under the direction of the Sisters of Charity, St. Joe’s continued to serve as West Girard’s public center for health and safety over 100 years later.
Behind our Name
Inspired by Teddy Roosevelt’s speech “Citizenship in the Republic,” we believe that good citizenship starts with embracing and representing the people around you. We want our residents to feel grounded in their community when they step foot in this building, much like civic spaces tend to do. It’s a notion we’ve carried on from the development’s former use as a hospital. Creating a shared environment that unites like-minded people is how we landed on “The Civic.”
